A hair transplant moves healthy follicles from a stable donor area into bald or thinning areas. Here you will find all methods and treatments at a glance.
How does a hair transplant work?
In hereditary hair loss, follicles on the top of the head are sensitive to the hormone DHT, whereas hair at the back and sides is usually resistant. In a transplant these resilient follicles are removed and placed where hair is missing. Because they keep their characteristics, they usually continue to grow permanently.
Professional bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology emphasise that modern procedures using natural hair groups (follicular units) now allow very natural results – provided planning and execution are right.
Methods compared
| Method | Extraction | Particularly suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| FUE | individual extraction with a micro punch | most patients, short hairstyles |
| Sapphire FUE | as FUE, channels with sapphire blades | larger areas with high density |
| DHI | as FUE, implantation with Choi pen | hairline, densifying, unshaven |
Why a hair transplant in Turkey?
Istanbul has become one of the world's leading centres for hair transplantation. Reasons include the high case numbers of experienced teams, short travel times from Europe and prices that are often well below Western European levels. At the same time quality varies greatly – which is why we have compiled our checklist for choosing a clinic.
Important to know
- The donor supply is limited – good planning thinks in decades.
- A transplant does not stop the loss of the remaining hair; an accompanying hair loss treatment often makes sense.
- The final result shows after about 12 months (see the timeline).

Frequently asked questions
Transplanted hairs come from the genetically stable donor area and usually grow for life. Non-transplanted hair, however, can continue to fall out.
There is no single best method. FUE, Sapphire FUE and DHI each have strengths – the choice depends on hair type, donor area, the area to be treated and personal preferences.
Depending on the scope, about 6 to 8 hours including breaks. The stay in Istanbul usually lasts three days.
