A hair transplant is always a team effort. What matters is who takes on which steps – because the result depends on many small decisions during the procedure.
Why this question matters
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) explicitly warns of the risks when unlicensed personnel perform medical tasks. In some highly commercialised facilities the patient sees the doctor only briefly, while extraction and incisions are performed by technicians.
Which steps belong in a doctor's hands?
- Diagnosis and indication: does a transplant make sense at all?
- Planning: hairline, graft count and distribution across the available donor capacity.
- Extraction: it determines whether the donor area is used evenly and gently.
- Channel opening: angle, direction and density decide how natural the result looks.
Well-trained assistants provide valuable support, for example sorting and placing grafts. What matters is transparency about who does what.
Questions you should ask
- Who exactly performs the extraction and the incisions?
- How many procedures does the same team perform on the same day?
- What qualifications and experience does the treating doctor have?
- Is there a dedicated contact person for aftercare?
More questions can be found in our checklist questions before choosing a clinic.
